Biggest problem you face as perfumer?
Q: Curious what types of problems you guys face when it comes to perfumery. Is it the equipment? Materials, creating the actual formulas, researching, etc…
—u/mahneiy
Too many ideas, not enough time /u/Vast-Orange1237
Price constrains on a brief /u/GIPgrasse
Mostly it’s how expensive things are. Scales were $600 (all prices in AUD), shipping fees for synthetics from overseas are around $150-200.
Having a day job.
Being a dumbarse with recording what I’ve made. About a year ago I made something that was really good – smelled like a classy jazz singer would smell – but there was something in the top end that I didn’t care for. Made a modification to the original document and saved over the previous version. The modified version was nice, but not as good. u/Tolerable-DM
Your TOP 3 CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT ingredients?
Q: What is your top three ingredients you just can’t live without?
Dont cheat, only three. Curious to see which ones you value and if you would, why?
—/u/No-Scheme-3759
Mine are boring, but: IES, Hedione and Ethylene Brassylate. Could have gone with so many musks but EB is cheap and versatile so I end up using it a ton. /u/Knox_Proud
ethylene brassylate: My favorite aromachemical. Its affordability belies its outstanding beauty.
bergamot FCF: This goes into basically every composition of mine. It’s an easy path to “complexity” for building the top-note layer. It’s incredibly versatile (there’s a reason bergamot and/or bergamot-like accords are ubiquitous in fragrances), and with a few small tweaks, it can be pushed in almost any direction.
Lilyflore: I can’t imagine composing a fragrance without some sort of lily-of-the-valley molecule(s). Lily-of-the-valley ACs provide life and harmony. My favorite in isolation is Majantol, but I find Lilyflore to be the better general-purpose workhorse in practice. /u/gambitbaron
Patchouli EO, Rose / Geranium materials, and resins, so i can construct amber and leather.
Been loving benzaldehyde in everything lately /u/JavierDiazSantanalml
